THE OUTSTANDING TECHNOPRENEUR COMPETITION 2013

  Introduction
 

The Outstanding Technopreneur Competition is organized by Malaysian Scientific Association (MSA) and WENCOM Career Consultancy (WENCOM) in conjunction with the 5th Technopreneurship & Innovation Symposium & Exhibition (TISE) 2013.

  Objectives of Competition
 

The main objectives of the competition are:

  1. To explore, identify and develop young Malaysian technopreneurs to set impetus to new economic development using Science & Technology;
  2. To retain and attract talents for the industrial and technological development of Malaysia;
  3. To channel Malaysian young intellectuals and professionals into the main stream of national and international development.

   
  Awards for Winners
 

The winners of the Outstanding Technopreneur Competition will be able to attend the two (2) day 5th Technopreneurship & Innovation Symposium (TISE) 2013 free of charge. TISE 2013 is scheduled to be held on 6-7 Oct 2013 at Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. Competitors who pass the preliminary judging will also be able to attend the above symposium free of charge.

In addition, the winners will also receive a 3 month Career Guidance & Match-Making Service with assistance for Internship/Traineeship at German/EU companies in Malaysia/ASEAN/EU. Winners will also be guided on intellectual property protection, company set-up and funding for technopreneurship development.

   
  Outcome of 4th TISE 2012 & Inaugural Outstanding Technopreneur Competition
 

Through our assistance and guidance, some of the achievements of previous winners:

   
 
  1. Mr Gan Yu Han who won the Best Young Technopreneur Award  was offered internship and R & D collaboration at the Automobile Institute, HAN University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands.

  2. Mr Gan Yu Han has also successfully set up and is running a company called Makerzone.

  3. Mr Gan Yu Han and Cik Rosazlin Binti Abdullah (who won the certificate of commendation for Young Technopreneur category)’s projects were publicized through the Wealth of Malaysia Book of Agensi Inovasi Malaysia, Prime Minister’s Department. The various winners projects were also promoted through the Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MGCC)’s magazines and business networking sessions,

  4. Mr Cheong Hoong Jun and Mr Tan Yeong Zhuang (who won the certificate of commendation for Student Technopreneur category) were awarded a scholarship amounting to S$25,000.00 for a MSc in Technopreneurship & Innovation at Nanyang Technopreneur Centre, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

  5. Muhammad Ruzaidi B Ismadi who won the Best Student Technopreneur Award is in the process of commercializing his project.
   
  Eligibility for Competition
  The Competition is open to all Malaysian tertiary education students and young intellectuals. It is divided into Student Category and Young Intellectual/Professionals Category. Finalists are required to make presentation to the judges.
 
  • Student Category - Malaysian undergraduate/diploma students studying locally or overseas including at universities, colleges, polytechnics and other post secondary institutions. ( excluding Form 6, A-Level and Matriculation students) or Malaysians with bachelor degree/diploma or equivalent.
  • Young Intellectual category - Malaysian Young Intellectuals including postgraduate students studying at tertiary education institutions locally or overseas or Malaysians with postgraduate degrees.

Entrants of competition must be 17- 40 years old as at 1 January 2013.

   
  Selection Criteria of the Competition
  The selection criteria of the Competition are:

Business acumen & drive;30%
Leadership qualities/soft skills/team work; 25%
Technical expertise/Availability of local resources;15%
Alignment with national policies and priority areas;15%
Creativity. 15%
   
  Panel of Judges
  Panel of judges comprises representatives from Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Technology Park Malaysia (TPM), Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MGCC), Malaysian Scientific Association (MSA), IEM Training Centre (wholly owned by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia) and Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (IKM).
   
  Entry Fees
 
  • All entries must be accompanied by Entry Fees.
  • All entries by students must be submitted via the universities/ colleges.
  • Entry Fees for undergraduate/diploma student is RM500.00 per student. For team participation, add an additional RM40 for each additional team member (up to a maximum of 4 team members including the leader), that is RM540 for 2 members, RM580 for 3 members, & RM620 for 4 members.
    Entry Fees for Young Intellectuals (including postgraduate student) is RM800.00 per student. For team participation, add an additional RM40 for each additional team member (up to a maximum of 4 team members including the leader), that is RM840 for 2 members, RM880 for 3 members, & RM920 for 4 members.
  • Winners will be offered an information counter at the exhibition.
  • Competition entry deadline is 31 August 2013.

5TH TECHNOPRENEURSHIP & INNOVATION SYMPOSIUM 2013

The Symposium is open to all.

Among others, the Symposium comprises a Forum on university-business collaboration in technopreneurship in Malaysia with eminent global leaders of chambers of commerce & industry based in Malaysia sharing with you ideas to forge this collaboration, in line with global development trends and Malaysian government’s Economic Transformation Programme. It provides an opportunity to gain insight into some of the successful models of university-business collaboration.

Aspiring technopreneurs are always looking for new business opportunities. The Symposium provides information on business opportunities in emerging Science & Technology fields, in line with Malaysian government’s Economic Transformation Programme and global trends.

One of the biggest challenges faced by a would-be-technopreneur or technopreneur is to develop an idea into a product. The Symposium provides guidance on how to develop an idea into a marketable product, issues related to it and showcases the success stories of prominent local  and international technopreneurs.
